If Traditional College Wasn’t For You, Your Future is Still Bright

Sometimes it takes trying out a job, college, or program to figure out that it may not be the thing for you after all. We can see where anyone who has withdrawn from a university may feel discouraged or nervous for the future. If you’ve recently left college or made another drastic life change, you aren’t alone. Here at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona, we’ve seen people blossom, discovering their passion and purpose. You could be next.

college is hard

The Future is About You

Let’s make this short and sweet. If you don’t love it, don’t do it! Realizing what is all wrong for you (like college) is the first step toward discovering your passion. It may feel like a load of trial and error, but it may also bring you one step closer to the perfect fit. Need a change? Let go of anything that holds you back so that the good things have room to come together in front of you.

Don’t Let Change Scare You

Instead, let change be the motivator! Taking time to seek what the world has to offer is the only way to find those fitting opportunities. Your time is now! Research, experiment, or talk to friends and confidants about finding the path just right for you. Exploration can be a beautiful thing. Starting fresh, like attending TSPA Altoona, can guide you to a new career, talent discovery, friendships, and reduced stress. Pave your own future with an opportunity for growth at beauty school. A simple tour of our school can give you a great first look at a potential future.

Success That Doesn’t Require a Diploma.

College is not the only road to success. In fact, billionaires like Bill Gates and Giorgio Armani left college to pursue their own dreams and businesses. Resigning from college is a chance to take a leap! If entrepreneurship intrigues you, then beauty school could be for you! As a cosmetologist or manicurist, you can pursue and run our own business. Options can include owning a salon, becoming a beauty educator, teaching master classes, working from home, or renting your own space. Business ownership is just one potential option as a cosmetology school graduate. Dream-chasing doesn’t require a degree!

Study What the Name Says

Learn the tricks of the trade! While any bachelor’s degree requires the completion of several extra or irrelevant courses, beauty school hones in on exactly that: beauty! To those art majors stuck taking math classes, we salute you. But forget weeder classes, statistics, and organic chemistry. Specialize in the trade you came to TSPA Altoona for. Instead of studying for four years and hoping to land a job, you can receive professional experience in the industry during your education, working with real guests and networking with professionals.

If college wasn’t for you, cosmetology could be! Leave those stressful year-round testing, late night jam cram slams, and student meal plan PTSD behind you where it belongs. Dropping out could just be an opportunity to drop in. Ridding the burden and stress of a university could be a blessing in disguise that brings you closer to our front door. Seek opportunity at TSPA Altoona today.

5 Easy DIY Costume Ideas for KILLING IT This Halloween

Haven’t picked out a costume? Don’t stress. Let us do that for you! Forget expensive pre-packaged costumes or complicated candy skulls. Here are five costumes you can pull off with what you’ve got right now.

Snapchat Filter

FILTER out the basics and get crafty in a SNAP!

Remember that gorgeous butterfly filter that brought out your inner goddess? Bring it back this Halloween in real life. Pick up some inexpensive craft butterflies and spray-paint them gold. Now you’ve got the perfect little accessories to fasten to some bobby pins and arrange around your face! Got gold glitter? Dab a little extra wow-factor on your forehead. Consider it done!

My Pale Skin Blog poses as golden butterfly snapchat filter

Channel that tech-savvy unicorn with a mouth full of rainbow! Using face paint or even eyeshadow, draw vertical lines downward from your bottom lip to your neckline. Don’t stress about perfectly straight lines. The filter’s rainbow is wavy and whimsical! Rosy up those cheeks with bright pink blush and you are as good as gold. Talk about tasting the rainbow!

Rainbow snapchat filter costume

That purple pouty Bratz Doll filter sure takes us back! You can be one too, doll! Dramatically overline your lips with a vibrant purple or pink. To achieve big and bold eyes, heavily line them with a brightening white liner and highlight the inner corners. Find little rainbow and heart stickers for your cheeks (or draw them on) and you are glammed and ready to go!

Catty Devil

Want to bring out the little devil in you but don’t have the horns to match? Trust us: all you need is your hair! You can say you’ve “grown” your own horns if it’s made up of hair. Twist small sections of hair into messy tall mini-buns behind your temples. Add additional strands to perfect the cone shape. Spray with red hair color for a devil, or leave your hair as is, paint on some whiskers and you’ve got a purrfect cat look!

Breadwinner

Pull off the perfect pun! Just because puns are done doesn’t mean they are overdone! We’ve seen The Spice Girls (peep nutmeg and cumin) or Smarty Pants (with Smarties taped to pants). But this one’s easier than a PB&J! Grab a loaf and wear a metal. Before you know it, you’ll have yourself a sugar baby. You’ll sure WIN Halloween with a look that is MONEY.

Regina George

You know what’s fetch? Retro plaid skirts of course! Between malls, thrift stores, and Mom’s closet, you can’t be far from one. Add a white tank, heels, and cap it off with a homemade Burn Book. All you have to do is print out a picture and tape it to a notebook! You’re not wearing a regular costume. You’re wearing a cool costume!

Regina George Halloween Costume

Of course that skirt doesn’t have to be limited to one costume! Try different plaid-wearing characters: Serena Van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, or Cher Horowitz.

Happy Tears

Feeling particularly strapped? Get busy for “crying” out loud! If you’ve got glitter, you’ve got a costume. Luckily a hot mess like this is lower maintenance than it looks. Take some glitter and any color of choice and apply it in a gravitational tear shape from the lower lashline to your cheeks. Don’t worry if it’s not neat. Tears aren’t Either. Call it A Happy Cry, Happy Tears, Unicorn Tears, Tears of an Angel, whatever comes to mind!

Happy Tears Makeup glitter

Halloween costumes are a MUST not a BUST. But picking one out shouldn’t be on your list of scares! Take it easy this Halloween with a costume to match. If your makeover includes dramatic makeup or fake lashes, check out these facts about lash extensions here!

Meet Michelle and Kayla: The TSPA Altoona Dream Team!

At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona, we believe in the power of teamwork. In order to help our students succeed, a team needs to share the same goals and passions if they want to stay in sync. Our very own Michelle Fogal and Kayla Shook are perfect examples of this type of passionate collaboration.

Michelle Fogal: Admissions Representative and Director of Education

Michelle graduated from TSPA Altoona in 2007 with her cosmetology license. She then returned to the academy and graduated with her educator’s license in 2014. With 11 years of experience both behind the chair and as an educator, Michelle has a true passion for the beauty industry. With help from her teammate and friend, Kayla, Michelle oversees recruiting and admissions. She visits high schools, guides student tours, and helps with the entire admissions process. In addition, she oversees educators and coaches the staff and students. “My favorite part of the job is helping students make a final decision,” Michelle says. “It’s a big decision to decide what career path you want to take. I take comfort in the fact that I work one on one with students and help them decide what to do with their future.”

Kayla Shook: Financial Aid Advisor

Kayla received her cosmetology license at TSPA Altoona in 2007 and her educator’s license in 2008. After this, she worked in a salon for a year and then returned to the academy to teach for three years. She is now in charge of the whole financial aid process at TSPA Altoona. Kayla and Michelle work together to help students succeed from start to finish. She wants the program to be affordable for everyone attending the school so they can achieve their goals. “I’m passionate about seeing students succeed from start to finish,” Kayla says. “I want them to feel comfortable, I want to get to know them. I love seeing the finished product at the end.” As the financial aid advisor, Kayla offers financial progress reports, information about financial aid options, and direct support to keep students on track at all times.

The Dream Team

When two people work well together, amazing things can happen. Michelle and Kayla may have different roles at the school, but they’ve worked hard to become a dual, cohesive unit of support for students. Their shared work mentality allows them to focus 100 percent of their energy on students’ success, needs, and issues. This mentality has created a positive, welcoming environment at TSPA Altoona. It’s a place where students can feel supported and always know that they are the top priority. “These two ladies are a dream team because they have the passion and the drive to understand and focus on the students,” says TSPA Altoona owner, Kim Hofer. “They know how to ask the right questions and make students feel comfortable enough to move forward. They’re extremely passionate and truly care about students.”

Michelle Fogal and Kayla Shook.

Connecting With Students and Creating a Support System

Michelle and Kayla work hard to help students and treat them as individuals. They don’t just focus on enrollment numbers but take the time to learn about the students’ dreams, goals, and concerns. At the end of the day, both women love what they do and this shines through as they connect with students and their families or support systems. Both Kayla and Michelle agreed that the most rewarding part of the job is hearing words of gratitude from students, parents, or other family members. When Michelle and Kayla hear that students have achieved their goals and are living happily in their new careers, it makes all the hard work worth it.

Meet Michelle and Kayla!

If you’re interested in working with this great team, contact us today to learn more about enrollment. When you join the TSPA Altoona family, you receive more than just an education. 5 Facts About Lash Extensions

Are you sick of using four coats of mascara to get the fullness and length you want? Do false eyelashes drive you crazy? Eyelash extensions could be your best solution. At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona, our students can provide eyelash extensions and eyelash extension refills under the supervision of licensed professionals. If you’re seriously considering eyelash extensions, read these five important facts first!

Black and white photo of woman with eyelash extensions

1.They can alter your makeup routine

While lash extensions look stunning and can reduce the time you used to take on your eyelashes, you may need to change up your makeup routine. Products you should eliminate include tubing mascaras, pencil eyeliners, waterproof liquid eyeliner, and oil-based face cleansers. Tubing mascara sticks to false lashes much more than natural lashes, pencil eyeliners cause lashes to tangle, waterproof liquid liner removal requires you to rub at the lash line and touch the lashes, and oil-based products can erode lash glue. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives for these products, so make the swap and you’ll be good to go!

Alternative products

  • Pencil eyeliner alternative: Powder eyeliner
  • Mascara alternative: Lightweight mascara
  • Liquid eyeliner alternative: Pen eyeliner
  • Oil makeup remover alternative: Oil-free, plant or water-based removers

2. Results can vary based on natural lashes

If you have thin, fine eyelashes to start with, you will not ever end up with extremely voluminous lashes. Eyelash extensions are attached to the natural lashes. They can only carry so much weight and if you overload them it can cause major damage. When getting eyelash extensions, it’s wise to have realistic expectations about what your lashes can and cannot do. Whether you have fine eyelashes, short eyelashes, or thick eyelashes, eyelash extensions can still do wonders.

Woman with brown eyes and long eyelash extensions.

3. They need to be kept clean

You should not get your eyelashes wet for 12-24 hours after application or touch-ups, but after that washing them is crucial. When you have false lashes, your cleansing routine needs to be more stringent than ever. If extensions aren’t regularly cleaned, infections like conjunctivitis and keratitis can occur. The eye area is extremely sensitive, so make sure you’re using a gentle cleanser. Stay away from oily cleansers and heavy eye creams. Try using a liquid makeup remover like micellar water, or pre-soaked, oil-free makeup removing pads.

Bioderma micellar water.

4. Eyelash extensions aren’t permanent

Lash extensions will last typically 6-8 weeks, depending on the way your hair grows. Lash maintenance is suggested every 3-4 weeks for a full look. Each extension attaches to a single, natural eyelash, so they do fall out over time as natural lashes do. In order to keep your lashes intact for as long as possible, avoid picking at them, rubbing them, or pulling them out.

5. There are different materials to choose from

The three common types of eyelash extensions are faux mink, synthetic, and silk. Mink lash extensions are feathery and light, maintain their shape and are typically shinier than other materials. However, mink lashes typically come at the highest price point. Synthetic lashes are made from polished acrylic and are denser, shinier, and stronger than other materials. As a result, they are the heaviest material. Silk lashes are the mid-weight material as far as extensions go. They’re finer and more flexible, allowing for good shape retention. Since they are light, these lashes are good for older clients or those with weak lashes. Silk lashes are thicker and have a rich black color, but they tend to be slightly uncomfortable. Think about which material would be best for you and your lifestyle when you visit us.

5 Ways to Show Your Team Spirit This Season

Chances are there is a sports team that you associate yourself with. No matter how serious you are about your team, it is always more exciting when you show some team spirit! Need some ideas to get you started? These are a few ways to let your spirit shine!

Color

If you bleed your team’s colors and want people to know, then coloring your hair might just do the trick! This bold statement will leave everyone knowing exactly which team you are rooting for, and how committed you are to it. If coloring your hair is currently not something you want to do, don’t worry there are other ways to show your colors.

Girl with long, vibrant red hair.

Ribbons

Another less permanent way to show your team spirit with your hair is by using ribbons. Simply tying your hair up or braiding your hair with a ribbon will help you stand out. The more creative you are the better, so think outside the box! Ribbons are very inexpensive and easy to find. You should be able to find your teams colors at your local craft or fabric store.

Blonde girl with sports team bow.

Apparel

Wearing your team’s apparel is always a good way to show your allegiance. Things like jerseys, ball caps, and even foam fingers can be game changers when it comes to team spirit. Not wanting to spend a lot of money? We know how you feel! Go buy some paint, a white shirt, and a hat and then go to town! Doing it yourself is a great way to stand out.

Face Paint

Another bold way to support your team is by painting your face! Face paint stands out and is easy to use. Painting a logo will always look good, but if you want something more simple, just paint your whole face. It can be difficult to paint something on your own face, so we would recommend having a friend do it for you.

Nails

Painting your nails is another awesome way to show your team spirit! As you can see in the picture above, it’s easy to be creative. Look online for cool ideas or just think of something yourself!
