5 Reasons Why You Might Love Cosmetology School!

Graduating from high school is a big deal, your future can be wide open! With so many possibilities it’s hard to know what comes next for you.

At The Salon Professional Academy(TSPA), Altoona, we understand that there isn’t one choice in higher education that’s right for everyone. Cosmetology school is a wonderful option that often gets overlooked.

Below are five reasons why cosmetology school could be an awesome option for you after graduation!

  1. You Can Follow Your Passion

Do you find yourself watching hair and makeup tutorials on YouTube? Are you always practicing your blending or lash application to perfect the latest looks? Cosmetology school may be the perfect choice for you so you can build an education in something you love. During school you can learn everything from hair cutting and styling to makeup application! Keep up on all the latest trends and fashions as you are educated on proper techniques and tricks!

  2. You Can Meet People From All Walks of Life

Interacting with other students and building relationships with guests is a major part of a cosmetology education! This is a good thing because you enjoy talking to people and hearing their stories. You may build lifelong friendships with other students who also have a passion for cosmetology!

  3. You’ll Be More Than a Number

You won’t need to worry about the teacher not knowing your name or not knowing the people in your class. Our educators strive to be there for you as you try new techniques, cuts, and colors. They are also dedicated to you and your personal success during cosmetology school. They have been in your shoes and understand what it’s like to be a cosmetology student.

  4. You Can Work in a Creative Space

Does the idea of sitting in an office all day make you cringe? As a cosmetology student you will be surrounded by fashion and creativity on a daily basis. You’ll also be with others who are just as excited about the beauty industry. This makes it easy to let your creativity flow as you learn the ins and outs of the beauty industry.

  5. Not a Traditional School

Cosmetology school could be a fabulous educational option because it isn’t a traditional schooling environment. It is the perfect mix of classroom time and hands on practice. You can take what you learn in the classroom and then practice what you learn in a real life work setting. Because we focus on mastering our technique in a salon-like setting you can be assured that you will spend less time in lectures and more time practicing your skill.

So what are you waiting for? Cosmetology school is an awesome educational option after graduation! The environment can be fun and exciting and you get to learn about the thing you are most passionate about: beauty!

An Open Letter to Who I Was Last Year

Hello to my old self,

It’s been a year since I looked at you this way. You had just submitted the withdrawal paperwork for the school that you tried so hard to fit into. It was your mom’s dream for you to become a nurse, your dad’s dream for you to become a lawyer, and yours to find a career that would give you the stability in life you wanted.

It all was going so well, you had everything planned out. But it didn’t work out.

The first time you started falling behind was in those big lectures. It was hard to hear from in the back of that giant room and asking questions wasn’t always possible. Even sitting in those rooms was nerve-wracking, there were so many people, and the professor often didn’t know your name. You’ll never forget how it felt when your English professor asked for your student number instead of your name. It was then you knew that that’s all you were to them: a number.

The problems continued as those same lectures began to feel overwhelming. You tried to seek help, to reach out to your professor or advisor but found yourself at the bottom of a waiting list that never seemed to get any shorter.

Some things made you feel right at home, the group assignments, the interactive classes. You loved every minute of it. However, it wasn’t enough to keep your GPA up. As you came to the end end of your first year, you were beginning to see the writing on the wall. It wasn’t working.

You were scared to tell your parents, so instead you quietly put in your withdrawal and tried to pick up the pieces.

But how would you pick up the pieces after everything you had strived for fell apart? You had dreams once. You had goals. But as you cried in front of that mirror everything felt so impossible.

Do you remember when you saw the ad? When did you drive by the school? All those memories from when you were younger and doing your friends’ hair, their makeup. It all came back. Just walking through those doors was like walking into an old friend’s home.

You talked to the admissions coordinator before you left. While it felt like a pipe dream, you couldn’t get it out of your mind. You couldn’t forget the way everyone smiled, and how easily they were able to talk to educators and staff. Everyone was so available and they knew the students’ names!

Besides, the work just seemed like such a challenging adventure!

While it was scary to tell your parents and those first few months took a lot of work, it felt so good to be challenged. Working hard and seeing your skills improve was worth it. work hard and to see your skills improve.

The more you worked, the more your grew, the more excited you got for the future. There were pitfalls, sure, but with the support of your fellow students and the educators at your school, you got through it! You faced it head on, and you won!

It was such a good feeling to succeed, to pass the tests and get your license! Now all your hard work has paid off, and here we are, ready to start our new career.

Although there is still work ahead, it’s a good feeling to know that you made it this far and that you can do it!

I can do it!

It’s been a long time since I first sat at my crossroads, but every moment has been filled with amazing experiences, new challenges, and accomplishments that have turned me into the amazing person I am today.

I am glad I made the choice I did.

To myself a year ago, and to everyone who has a dream, who needs a change, or who faces a big decision, know that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to – all for a better you and a better tomorrow.

Love, me.

June Start Dates Are The Best Start Dates

June is an amazing month! The sun is shining, summer is beginning, and those mysterious vacations are getting ever closer. But June also holds another little secret, one that if you have been thinking about starting cosmetology school could result in added funds for school in the form of grants and federal aid. That probably seems like a mouthful. And that’s to be expected. Financial aid can be a confusing and sometimes daunting process. To help ease any confusion, here are a few basics, as well as details as to how starting in summer can result in added financial benefits.

Beauty School Financial Aid

The Salon Professional Academy Altoona is proud to offer financial aid to those who qualify. To apply for financial aid students will be asked to fill out the FAFSA. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It will compile all of your information and determine your award amount. The award amount that you receive is based off of many things, including income and schooling.

Loan Types

There are two different types of loans that you can get through the federal loan system: subsidized and unsubsidized. The interest on subsidized loans is paid by the federal government while you are in school or your loans are deferred. Unsubsidized loans on the other hand, accrue interest while you are in school. This is important to remember as the money you borrow will have to be paid back, and the type of loan it is will determine the interest and even the monthly payment amount.

Federal Pell Grant

When applying for federal aid through the FAFSA you are also applying for the Pell Grant. This is a federal grant that is distributed based on need. Pell grants are only available for undergrad students, or students receiving certain degrees. You can qualify for the federal Pell Grant as a student at TSPA Altoona. Unlike federal loans, Pell Grants do not need to be repaid, and can make a considerable dent in your education financing.

Summer Aid Benefit

As mentioned at the beginning, starting school in June can create an added benefit towards financial aid. This is because the FAFSA stretches from July 1st to June 30th in a year span, meaning that if you begin school prior to the June 30th cut off you will be receiving funds, and possibly even a Pell Grant, from the previous year and then again in July when the cycle resets itself. Utilizing the FAFSA scheduling in such a way can help to eliminate any funding gap you may have, as well as take full advantage of any pell grant you may receive, ultimately decreasing the amount you will have to pay back. If financials have been keeping you from pursuing your dreams, don’t let this June pass you by. Contact our admissions department and get your application process started before time runs out! *Financial aid, financial assistance, and grants are available to those who qualify.
