Today Taylor our recruiter stopped at Shag in Duncanville, PA to sit and talk with stylist Sara Mcgarvey.
Sara graduated in 2013 from TSPA she is certified in
Brazilian Blow outs, is a wax specialist, and is certified in Kenra color.
Sara’s favorite Educator was Miss Rose because she said she was stern, and she made her do something over and over until she learned it.
What made Sara choose shag? She said- ” my first impression was great, it looked like a really fun salon, and the atmosphere was great is was also super busy.”
Sara said that TSPA helped her learn how to sell retail and make money in a salon. She said that she has to hit certain numbers at Shag so it really helped her to be able to move up in the salon with the education they provided.
Sara’s future plans are to stay at shag for a few more years and than eventually be a TIGI representative and travel to salons to sell it and educate people on it.
Sara said her role models are her mom and her boss Craig. She chose her my mom because she said she was always there to reinforce that it will all be okay even when she thought everything was falling apart.
She chose Craig because he has taught her everything that she needed to know to grow and learn in a salon, and he has gone above and beyond his way to be her mentor and guide her in the right direction.
Sara wanted to give advice to the students at TSPA. She said that the students should go to a salon where they are able to move up and grow with the company and earn rewards and to go to a salon where they have opportunities. She mentioned that they should go to a salon where they can do so many different things and not just the same things over and over again.
Sara also said no matter how difficult the day is, there are always better days ahead and you can’t let the one bad day ruin the whole week. Also don’t ever let a client question your ability as to why your even doing hair.

About Anna Lewis
Anna Lewis is a 2014 TSPA grad. Anna said she has been interested in a career in cosmetology since she was about 12 years old. She said she knew she always wanted to be a cosmetologist and started at TSPA as soon as she graduated high school .
Anna’s Favorite Educator was Miss Michelle. Anna said that she choose Miss Michelle as her favorite because she always had something new to show me and was very inspiring to me.
Anna said she chose Holiday Hair because it was close to home and was a good way to build up clientele!
Anna’s Future plans are to stay with Holiday Hair and work her way up in the franchise. Anna also wants to learn more and continue with classes whenever she can.
Anna’s role model is her father because he always pushed her to do anything she put her my mind to, and wouldn’t let her stop until her goals were reached.
How TSPA Altoona Made a Difference For This Grad
How did TSPA help Anna in her career today? Anna said ” TSPA definitely prepared me for boards and helped me with my confidence to know what I was doing without them by my side.” Anna also said that she wouldn’t of went anywhere else, she feels like she’s ahead of the game by choosing TSPA.
Anna would like to thank TSPA and each of the educators for everything that they do. She wouldn’t be where she was today without them by her side.
Everyone meet Brandi Hammersley, a 2013 TSPA Altoona graduate!
Brandi’s favorite educator was Miss Rose and Miss D, she chose Miss Rose because she was the one that would push her no matter what level she wanted to achieve. She chose Miss D because she was a very good educator and could teach her things on the level that she needed to be taught and was also more hands and helped her when she needed it.
How Did TSPA Help Brandi in Her Career?
TSPA helped her with consultations and helped her become more comfortable speaking to people.
Brandi said she chose Holiday Hair because “I was a new grad and needed somewhere where people are walking in constantly so the clientele itself was perfect and will get me to the point where I can own my own someday.”
Brandi’s Future plans are to grow within the franchise of Holiday Hair until something would happen that She wouldn’t want to work there anymore.
Brandi wants to thank the staff and TSPA for always being there for her and believing in her.
While the educators are out and about learning tons of new things in Vegas to bring back to us, our recruiter Taylor was out and about finding some grads and visiting the local salons in Ebensburg PA. Taylor got to talk to Olivia Lauren! A 2015 TSPA Graduate.
Olivia currently works belong side Taylor at Holiday Hair in Ebensburg as a stylist!
Olivia said she has been interested in a career in cosmetology for about 2 years because her friend told her about TSPA and it sounded exciting so she decided to give a try when nursing didn’t work out.
Olivia’s favorite educator was Miss D. Olivia said she was very helpful, very good at explaining things, and was really calm about bad situations.
Olivia said that she chose Holiday Hair because: “I figured it would be a good starting place to build up my clientele, and my boss Heather is a hair genius and is helping me become a successful stylist.”
Her future plans are to eventually go back for her educator’s license and eventually run and own her own salon.
Who is Olivia’s Role Model?
“Chris Baran because when I was in school he taught a couple classes and he really inspired me and taught me to love what I do as a stylist .”

Meet Carly Sullivan!
Taylor got to talk to Carly Sullivan, a Pruontos Graduate of 2006 and Educators license grad of 2007.
Carly worked at Ulta for 5 years then took over Tropical Expression Boutique and Spa in 2013 and is now the owner.
Carly’s Favorite Educator was Miss Amy because she took things from basic level to how to do the whole thing at a professional level she also taught everything step-by-step until she understood it.
Carly’s Future plans are to grow and build her own plaza with her business and go back to school for anything in the management field.
What made Carly take over ownership Tropical Expression? Carly said “the opportunity was there and I took it and it was the best decision of my life. I was able to be a mom and work at the same time and make my own schedule.
How Our School Made a Difference
Carly said that Pruontos /The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona helped her in her career today because, ” I am very proud of the school I attended and it is as realistic as possible in the role that they play, they kept it real with me and taught me everything I needed to know and helped me find my confidence.”
Carly would like to thank the staff because she said she loved everyone there, what she does, easy to talk to everyone, she looks forward to a continuing relationship with the team and can call or go there whenever she wants because they are like family to her.

We love to see how awesome our TSPA graduates are doing. That is Taylor’s (The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona’s recruiter) mission– to find them all and visit all the salons in the area along the way! We want everyone to know how amazing our school is.
Taylor got to talk to salon owner and a graduate of TSPA Altoona, Tawny Smola.
Tawny owns Hair Mafia in Altoona, PA. She is a TSPA graduate of 2013. Tawny’s Future plans are to eventually franchise her brand as Hair Mafia and expand her business. She also wants to become a Redken color specialist. Tawny said that TSPA helped her in her career today because they gave her a solid foundation and motivation to finish school when she didn’t think she would. Tawny’s favorite Educator was Miss D and Miss Rose because they both completely inspired her to do hair and to keep doing hair even when she thought she didn’t want to.
A Bright Future
What made Tawny open up her own salon? She said: “My fiancé is a business owner and he thought it would be a good idea and kept inspiring me and motivating me by telling me I could do it and then eventually my dream became a reality.”
Tawny would like to thank everyone for believing in her when she didn’t believe in her self and for the awesome education TSPA gave her!
Our recruiter Taylor was out in Altoona today visiting salons in the area and got to talk to Samantha Srock.
Sam is a 2013 graduate of The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona and has been working at Smart Styles in Altoona, PA for a year.
Sam said that TSPA has helped her in her career today by preparing her for the salon world, and for always believing in her when she didn’t believe in herself.
Sam’s favorite educator was Miss Diane, Miss D was her favorite teacher because she was always outgoing, always knew what she was doing, and was there to help me when I needed her.
She wanted to thank the educators for always being there and supporting her in anything she wanted to do!
Taylor recently got to see one of her The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona friends while she was out and about at salons. She got to stop and talk to Preston Mallow for a while and see how he’s doing at his new job at Master Cuts in Altoona, PA. Preston is a 2015 TSPA grad and has never been happier to be in a salon doing what he loves.
Preston said he chose Master Cuts because ” it kinda just fell into my lap I was on my way to apply at another salon and saw that they were hiring and stopped in and by fate they called me the next day and the rest is history.”
Preston’s future plans include going back to TSPA for his educator’s degree, working his way up in the Regis Corporation, and then eventually owning his own salon.
Preston’s favorite teacher when he was in school was Miss Jen. She was his favorite because she was his part-time coach and pushed him and helped him to achieve his goal of level jumping, and never let him quit.
Preston’s role model is Tabatha Coffey because He always wanted to do hair but she gave him the inspiration to keep moving forward because her outlook on life is positive and motivating.
How Did TSPA Altoona Help Preston?
“They laid down the foundation of what I needed to build off of and gave me a confidence I didn’t know I had.”
Preston would like to Thank the TSPA team for incorporating a part-time program when he was going there so he could work and achieve his dreams as a cosmetologist at the same time!
Yet another Grad Taylor got to reach out to! Miss Hannah Wray, The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Altoona’s 2014 Teacher’s program graduate!
Hannah currently works at Ulta as a stylist in Altoona, PA , is certified as a Redken Colorist, and has her
certification in Dream Catcher Hair Extensions.
Hannah’s future plans are to become a Redken educator, and depending on where she ends up she wants to do some kind of editorial work. Hannah’s favorite teacher was Miss Rose. She said she was easy to talk to, and focused on important things.
How TSPA Altoona Helped Hannah
Hannah said TSPA helped her in her career because TSPA focused on the Redken brand and helped her to take school more seriously because of our name and reputation as TSPA and Redken.
Hannah said, “I appreciate that they love what they do at TSPA and how motivating the teachers were, and I always loved Redken but I appreciate it, even more, attending school there.”

How TSPA Altoona Prepared Kellie for Her Future
Kellie is a 2006 Pruontos Graduate. She currently works at Holiday Hair Ivy Side and has for about 6 years now.
Kellie’s favorite educators were Miss D and Miss Rose. She said she chose these two educator’s because they were both very hands-on and helpful. Kellie said
“If I was having trouble with something they would make me get a mannequin out and show me how to do something over and over again until I understood it.”
They helped her a lot and instead of making a big deal and getting frustrated they gave her confidence and helped her understand instead.
Kellie said she chose Holiday Hair because of the busy location and the girls that worked there. She said it would be a good place for her to build up her clientele.
